One or two seconds of semi-nudity 80 minutes of stupidity. There is a lot of really fake looking blood(corn syrup)and no gore.Come on!!!!… in this day and age where’s the gore, save that for Hershell Gorden Lewis and the rest of the old campy splatter fest when they had less to work with and did at least have good gore amounts! I was duped into this purchase by the cover which looks good and that’s about it.[...]. There’s not much going on in this flim if u can call it that. Looks like my drunk uncles camera work at our family reunion barbecue. Some of the people that r in this, look as if there trying to hold back from giggling and staring into the camera lens. [...] I only spend time to write this because of the anger toward myself for buying and the people who distributed this dung. Hopefully I can save u from purchasing this waste of time and money. It’s not one of those so bad its good movies. I usually really like trash that’s entertaining. There isn’t one damn thing to like here. Do yourself a favor and don’t spend any time on this, keep your money and go out for pizza.

Debbie Rochon stars in this ridiculous indy film release. The rating on the box is B for Boobs Blood and Bad Words. I think that says it all. Film Threat says it’s ‘Brainless Fun’ and that’s exactly right. It’s a fun movie that doesn’t take itself too seriously.

If you did not know this film was directed by Charles Sturridge you would swear this was a Merchant/Ivory production – no small praise. This film is a comedy/tragedy based on Forster’s first novel. As with all of Forster’s novels, class distinctions and the situations which arise between them are the central focus of the film. Initially, what results from a newly widowed, young woman (Mirren), taking a trip to Italy and impulsively marrying the son of a local dentist, throws her staid inlaws into a tizzy, and makes for several comic scenes. However, when she has a child – the attempts of her inlaws to “save” the child from what they believe will be a poor upbringing has tragic consequences. All of the actors embody the characters as Forster must have envisioned ninety years ago – Judy Davis is especially good as the spinsterish Harriett and Barbara Jefford is an imposing Mrs. Herriton. Helen Mirren is luminous as the flightly, wayward Lilia and Giovanni Guidelli, as her handsome younger husband, is a perfectly likeable rogue. The relationship which develops throughout the film between Phillip, (Rupert Graves), and Caroline, (Helena Bonham-Carter), is a thing to behold! You don’t even realize it is happening (and neither do they) until it’s too late. Graves is especially good as Phillip – a young man who is drifting through his comfortable life – until this complicated situation arises and forces him to decide if he is going to let life happen to him or just watch it happen to others. The locations in England and Italy are exquisite and the pace of the film keeps you guessing. The final tragedy and ending are especially bittersweet. Just like real life, things aren’t always resolved neatly – but out of all the messiness can come true understanding and forgiveness. A wonderful, hopeful film.

WHERE ANGELS FEAR TO TREAD got a bit lost in the shuffle of the film adaptations of E. M. Forster’s novels that came out in the 1990s. Neither as much of a crowd-pleaser as A ROOM WITH A VIEW, as appealling to a gay audience at MAURICE, or as dignified and prestigious as A PASSAGE TO INDIA, this film instead featured the stars of each of the previous three Forster adaptations–Helena Bonham-Carter, Rupert Graves, and Judy Davis–and cast them very atypically in roles that seemed like poor fits for them each at the time but now in hindsight show off each of their considerable ranges. The widowed Lilia Herriton (the wonderful Helen Mirren, in a terrific performance) travels to Italy while chaperoning her younger neighbor Caroline Aboott (Bonham-Carter) on her first trip there, and marries a handsome young Italian man mostly to escape her interfering in-laws back in suburban London; they dispatch her brother-in-law Philip (Graves) to rescue her, but he is rebuffed by Lilia and her virile lover. But Lilia is miserable in her new mismatched marriage and dies soon after in childbirth; Philip and his puritanical sister Harriet (Davis) then return to Italy with Miss Abbott to get Lilia’s baby at any cost. The story has often been classified as a comedy, despite the tragic deaths that occur in it, and the director, Charles Sturridge, plays up the comic elements of it considerably. Judy Davis dominates this film (as she does every film she’s ever been in) with a raucous performance as a hysterical prude that is actually nicely shaded; while Bonham-Carter does much with the tough role of the unsteady Miss Abbott. Sturridge probably does not take as much advantage of the beautiful medieval towers of San Gimignano, where the work was filmed, as he should have, and relies too much on conversation (as might be expected from a director who has worked largely in television). But the film has nonetheless aged beautifully over the years (particularly since Davis’s wild turn here is now less unexpected, and can be seen as more of a piece with her other later comic performances instead of as an aberration from her more subtle earlier dramatic work), and it deserves rediscovery in an American DVD version.

The inimitable Peter Sellers strikes again as Chief Inspector Jacques Clouseau, in this fourth installment of the classic “Pink Panther” series, “The Pink Panther Strikes Again,” directed by Blake Edwards. Given the fact that the assessment of comedy is intrinsically subjective, this film is arguably laugh for laugh and sight gag for sight gag the funniest of the five (followed closely by the second of the series, the hilarious farce, “A Shot In The Dark). In this one, former Chief Inspector Dreyfus (Herbert Lom) is about to be released from the mental hospital– in which he has resided since being driven crazy by Clouseau– when on the very afternoon of his hearing he is visited by none other than Clouseau himself, who has come to speak on behalf of his former boss. Suffice to say that by the time Clouseau is through “helping,” he is driven from the premises by the relapsed, raving madman, Dreyfus. And it’s only the beginning of the inept French Inspector’s antics that, before it is over, will include a trip to the Ocktoberfest, encounters with a dozen hit-men from around the world, a beautiful Russian spy named Olga (Lesley-Anne Down), a surprise Egyptian spy (who will remain nameless) and a one-man assault on a castle. As Laurel and Hardy proved so many times before, for every action there is a reaction; a theorem of which proof is unequivocally provided here by the relationship between Sellers and Lom. This was the film in which Edwards and his stars not only further devised, but honed to perfection, their foolproof formula for laughs: After the “first wave” of hilarity provided by Sellers, it is followed up– in just enough instances to be totally effective– by Lom’s reaction to 1.) Sellers directly (as in the first, classic scene at the mental hospital), or 2.) Lom’s reaction to Seller’s antics as they are related to him by a third party. It’s a one-two punch that never fails and which, in effect, derives twice the fun from a single gag. And it’s brilliant. But at the end of the day, it must be noted that there is one element above all else that accounts for the success of this film, and that, of course, is the Man himself, Peter Sellers. Sellers must be regarded as– if not “the,” then at least one of the– funniest actors ever to grace the silver screen. There was no end to the ways he could make you laugh; from the subtlest expression– an eye averted or perhaps the slight raising of an eyebrow– to the broadest slapstick, it was all within his personal domain, and he was the Master. Physically, practically all he had to do to get a laugh was show up; consider the scene in which he arrives at the hospital to visit Dreyfus: As he saunters across the lawn of the vast grounds surrounding the buildings, a croquet mallet and ball lying to one side catches his eye; there is just the slightest hesitation in his step, the subtlest change of expression in his eyes and the merest inclination of the head. And there, in that briefest of moments upon the screen, you know– beyond the shadow of a doubt– what is about to transpire. And you’re right; a moment later Clouseau has the mallet in his hand and his foot on the ball, and even as it’s happening– just as you knew it would in that split second before it did– he has you on the floor laughing. That was the gift– and the genius– of Peter Sellers. Was every film he made a classic? A great film? Of course not; but you would be hard put to find a single performance of his, even in a bad film (Like 1970′s “There’s A Girl In My Soup”), that did not embody that unique spark that defined him. It was certainly alive in his portrayal of Clouseau (possibly the definitive Seller’s character), and in retrospect, what a shame it seems that there were only five “Panther” movies ever made. But so it is, and shall ever be. The supporting cast includes Burt Kwouk (as the ever faithful and attacking manservant, Cato), Andre Maranne (Francois), Colin Blakely (Alec Drummond), Leonard Rossiter (Inspector Quinlan), Richard Vernon (Dr. Fassbender), Briony McRoberts (Margo) and Michael Robbins (Jarvis). A funny movie that showcases one of Cinema’s truly unique and funny actors, “The Pink Panther Strikes Again” is a side-splitting, fun movie you can watch over and over and never grow tired of. The best of the series, it stands as a glowing tribute to the comedic genius of Peter Sellers.

This is my all time favorite Pink Panther film. I think that I like it the best of the series as is dwells so totally on Herbert Lom’s madness, which is, of course, entirely caused by Clouseau. The opening scene of the film sets the pace, with the brilliant slapstick ‘Dreyfus in the lake’ segment (I am particularly fond of the role of the rake in that scene.)

The characterizations of Dreyfus and Clouseau are totally wonderful in this film. Watching Dreyfus descend into total madness is one of the all time greatest comic performances. Sellers as Clouseau is wonderful playing off of Lom, in such great segments as the ‘hallucinatory dentist’ and the ‘hunchback and the bomber’ scenes. This film is much less subtle than my other favorite from the series “A Shot in the Dark”, but what it loses in subtlety, it gains in situational humor unrivalled in any other comedy (“Does your dog bite?”…”No.”…”I thought you said your dog did not bite.”…”That is not my dog.”) Only Sellers could make these scenes work, and work they do, brilliantly so.

There are so many great scenes and lines that I couldn’t possibly list them. Some of the best lines ever written for a comedy are in this film. To go with the brilliance of the script, the excellent direction from Blake Edwards, the always entertaining animated credits, the beautiful sets, the acting from everyone, led, of course, by Sellers and Lom, is letter perfect.

The DVD is an excellent transfer, and very pleasant to watch. The only real options are language and subtitle related, though there is an original trailer. I would have loved to have seen some outtakes as extras. Reportedly the cast frequently broke up laughing during the filming of this movie, and there is no wonder, given how funny the material is.

I first saw this in the theater when I was a kid. I loved it so much then that I went back several more times, and never tired of it. Now, almost thirty years later, I still never tire of this film. If you haven’t seen “The Pink Panther Strikes Again”, by all means do so at once. If you have, it’s time to get reacquainted with a brilliant old friend!

I LOVE Last of the Summer Wine. Foggy, Campo, and Clegg are just hysterical. The trouble that they can find in such a small town is amazing. The character actors are great. Wish we had some decent type of TV programs like this in America. Would watch this any time it is on or if I could get more of their DVDs would buy them in a minute.

I absolutely love this show. The synopsis has one error in it. The village is called Holmfirth. The mountain range is the Pennines. These lads can find more mischief to get into in a sleepy little village, it’s amazing. They even manage to turn the Yuletide on it’s ear. I roar with laughter every time I see them.

In other words, don’t start getting ridiculous, going crazy and all, like Tupac’s best character ever, the one he came to maybe live out, some would say. Pac’s performance is truly amazing, let’s not forget, he was a trained actor before he even got into hip hop, so this maybe shouldn’t be SO surprising, but for the fact that he hits it so well because, well, it’s him. This is Omar Epps first movie (I think) as well, and he was excellent, as was the guys who played Rahim and Steel. The movie is great and well shot, with excellent music throughout. It’s primarily the story of a dj (Epps), really, just trying to get on, and his friends, and the possibilities that can erupt in every man’s struggle for respect. Never mind the critics, they seem to critique all black movies the same. This film is unique. It’s NOT that violent, especially in the day of Quentin Tarantino or even Menace II Society. There’s cameos by tons of rappers, including Special Ed, EPMD, Latifah, Naughty by Nature, and others. But they’re small and inconsequential roles for the most part (as they should be). Don’t watch this movie as any commentary on Harlem or on black youths or any of that trash. Only racists try to generalize and make every movie that a black person makes into an all-encompassing Statement of Reality. It’s overall a somewhat fun movie with a strong bite to it. And it’s got a classic soundtrack, the first of the many rap soundtracks that would come out with every movie after this. It’s perfect, not too ambitious, doesn’t try too hard, isn’t a real “tear jerker” though it can be touching. Overall, I’d say its a classic and ten years later, its still as enjoyable.

Unique, fun and gut-bursting humor! “Sgt. Frog” is probably one of the most odd and crazy anime series you’ll ever see. Hilarious in Japanese but the writing for the English dub definitely takes things up a notch!

Since 1999, the manga series “Keroro Gunso” (aka “Sgt. Frog”) by Mine Yoshizaki (“Arcade Gamer Fubuki”, “Chibi Kero” and “Seven of Seven”) has been entertaining readers. Since 2004, the anime series has been entertaining viewers and both continue to be popular long-running series in Japan. Now the award winning series gets its first US anime DVD release with the first 13 episodes now arriving in the US.

The anime series is directed by Yusuke Yamamoto (“Welcome to the NHK, “Sakura Taisen”, “Mobile Suit Victor Gundam” and Arjuna”) and features character designs by Fumitoshi Oisaki (“Romeo x Juliet”, “Ontama” and “Kaleido Star”). The series is known for its use of parodies of pop culture and in the Japanese case, you will see a plenty of pop culture references to anime and video games. While, the English dub features a slightly different script than the Japanese and utilizes American pop culture (which I will describe more in the video and audio segment of this review).

The series revolves around an alien race of frogs who have come to conquer the planet Earth. But somehow along the way, things didn’t go as expected and the leader of the platoon, Sergeant Frog finds himself living with the Hinata family. Always up to mischief and trying to find a way to conquer Earth, he is befriended by the weak and paranormal/supernatural obsessed boy Fuyuki, beaten to a pulp by his strong sister Natsumi and given a place to live by their mother (and manga editor) Aki who uses him as a source of ideas for her new manga.

With his obsession for Mobile Suit Gundam models, television and snacks, Sgt. Frog gets too used to human life, that is until his fellow platoon finds out that he has been neglecting his duties.

“Sgt. Frog – Season One, Part 1 features a total of 13 episodes on two DVD’s. Each episode consists of two mini-episodes, most often at times are related to each other. but sometimes you get two different stories per episode. Here is a spoiler-less summary:

DISC 1:

* EPISODE 1- Meet the Sergeant! – The introduction of Keroro and how he came to live with the Hinata family.

* EPISODE 2- Bag of Secrets! – We are introduced to Momoka Nishizawa who is in love with Fuyuki Hinata. We are also introduced to the alien frog, Tamama.

* EPISODE 3 – Amphibian On the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown – With Tamama getting all the things he wants, Keroro is bored by living at the Hinata home. Meanwhile, a mysterious thing has been spying on the Hinata’s.

* EPISODE 4 – Blood Violence Death Kill! – We are introduced to Corporal Giroro and Giroro comes up with an idea to make Keroro more of a warrior.

* EPISODE 5 – The Day Gundam Cried! – Keroro wants a Gundam at a toy store and needs Fuyuki’s help.

* EPISODE 6 – Ghost Kiss-Perer! – Momoka invites Fuyuki to a private island and next thing you know the Hinata family and frogs are all coming. Will Fuyuki and her butler Paul be able to make Fuyuki like him?

* EPISODE 7 – Apocalypse Later! – The Lord of Terror makes her appearance. Meanwhile, we learn that Tamama is jealous of her.

DISC 2:

* EPISODE 8 – Base: The Final Frontier! – Keroro builds a secret base inside the fridge.

* EPISODE 9 – Desperately Seeking Brains! – Mutsumi Saburo introduces a member of the Armpit Platoon… Kururu. Meanwhile, Kururu creates an age manipulation gun that can make anything many years younger and Aki Hinata volunteers.

* EPISODE 10 – Sgt. Frog versus the Cavitians of Cavity 9! – Keroro is suffering from a cavity (alien invaders have taken control of Keroro’s cavity) and Kururu comes up with an idea to take them on.

* EPISODE 11 – Fake It `Til You Make It! – Celebrities from a galactic TV show want to do a show on Earth at the Hinata home.

* EPISODE 12 – Pop Startled! – A pop star (a third runner-up of “Galactic Idol”) visits the Hinata home. And Giroro loses his weapon’s sash.

* EPISODE 13 – Viper? I Hardly Knew Her! – The introduction of Dororo and Koyuki.

VIDEO & AUDIO:

“Sgt. Frog” is presented in 4:3. For the most part, the entertaining part of “Sgt. Frog” are its characters but also the little Japanese pop culture references, especially Keroro’s love for “Gundam” (which the model kits are featured in the anime series). The colors are vibrant and for a television show, the animation works great for this series. Keroro and his members of the Armpit Platoon are frogs with a cool and cute character design, that it’s no surprise that this series has an extensive merchandise collection in Japan.

As for audio, the English dub is featured in Dolby Surround Sound and the Japanese is featured in stereo. For the most part, I have watched both in English and Japanese and the voice acting on both are great. As for audio quality, I preferred to watch the series with my receiver setting at stereo on all channels but for the most part, the English dialogue is front and center channel driven if watched via 5.1 Dolby Surround.

Now when it comes to audio and watching it on both languages, there is a difference between the English and Japanese version. For the most part, the English version has a rewritten script that utilizes the same storyline as the Japanese version but features American pop culture references and more dialogue. So, for example, when the Japanese dialogue is quiet, in the English dialogue, you may hear the narrator speaking.

Although I tend to prefer watching anime in Japanese, I have to admit that I found the English dub quite wild and crazy. For example, during one scene in which Hinata siblings and the aliens meet a fellow Galactic pop star, in the Japanese dialogue there is discussion of how popular she is. While in the English dub, they use “American Idol” references to showcase her popularity.

Granted, some people may not be familiar with the American pop culture references (especially since certain situations are taken from that time period, for example the Miley Cyrus and Asians comment) and may easily fly over the heads of those who are not familiar with American pop culture but for the most part, the rewritten screenplay by Jamie Marchi, Jared Hedges and Joel Bergen will easily make people laugh. For those familiar with what Joel Bergen did with “Crayon Shin Chan” will know what kind of humor to expect from the series albeit a more PG rating.

Subtitles are featured in English.

JUDGMENT CALL:

Crazy, enjoyable and just all out fun! I have to admit that I was completely unfamiliar with the story of “Sgt. Frog” before watching this DVD. I knew about the character Keroro and the platoon members through the various merchandise seen at many Japanese and Chinese shops but I really didn’t know anything about the series.

And what can I say, after watching “Sgt. Frog – Season One, Part 1, I’ve become a fan! I really don’t think anyone can be disappointed with this DVD set as its absolutely fresh, wild and crazy. As people are wanting to find a series that is fun and unique, I think that anime fans that are into comedy-based series can find something to like about “Sgt. Frog”.

Having watched the episodes in Japanese and English, the Japanese version was hilarious but being an American and familiar with the pop culture references in the dialogue and the Japanese pop culture references on the show, I had a great time watching it with the English dub. You can tell there was great care on the American side into utilizing the time of the series to create additional dialogue and of course, coming up with something new to make the characters much crazier for an American audience.

It’s important to note that FUNimation Entertainment went with the original names for the dub, so for those who saw the test episode on YouTube and were not satisfied with the name changes, FUNimation Entertainment did fix that up with only Giroro’s cat keeping the name “Mr. Furbottom” and the voice talent changed for the final cut.

As for the parents who are wondering if the show is safe for children, although the series is rated TV PG, there is no naughty talk or any profanity.

There is only one scene in episode 9 in which a young Aki Hinata (who looks like Fuyuki) is hugged by Momoka Nishizawa and in the process of that hug, Nishizawa who wraps her arm around Aki and her hands on the side of her chest, she wonders why Fuyuki has breasts. And of course, there is a lot of mayhem and some fight scenes but seriously, the series is quite tame and is even aired to children in Japan (as evident by its targeted merchandise towards children in Japan) and various parts of the world. And I also shared the series with my six-year-old son who absolutely loved the series.

Overall, this is an anime series that is worth purchasing! For those who enjoyed “Crayon Shin Chan” (US dialogue version) may enjoy this much tamer but hilarious anime series. But really, this series really can’t be compared to anything. It’s that fresh, wild and crazy. One can definitely expect “Sgt. Frog” to be a series that has cool and fun characters and outrageously written episodes, definitely make this anime series worth the purchase!

Highly recommended!

Sgt. Frog is one of those rare anime properties that could only be made possible by global cooperation. The look, the feel, the animation-style (heck the main character perhaps most of all) are all of Asian influence but much of this particular set’s charm stems from its American dub work. In all honesty, it would seem very easy to screw things up the way Funimation went about combining the artistic influence of two very-different nations but after having just completed this collection, I can state with confidence that they defied the odds with this one! But before we get ahead of ourselves here, let’s take a look at the cold hard facts, shall we?

Funimation has recently acquired the rights to the show and has wasted little time in getting the first part of the first season (Episodes 1-13) release out to the North American public for the first time ever. Coming in at a total runtime of 325 minutes, Sgt. Frog Season One Part 1 spans 2 discs and comes packaged as a pair of thin packs within a cardboard slipcase.

The show wears an appropriate if slightly conservative TV PG rating, which is presumably based more on adult-themed references and cartoony violence over nudity, foul language or gore.

Language options are typical sub & dub meaning the option of original Japanese dialog track (stereo) or an English dub (5.1 Dolby Surround) and English subtitles available under either language choice.

Extras include Pekopon Invasion Recon Data, textless songs and a host of Funimation trailers.

The story, which actually works far better than I can possibly summarize here, goes something like this: Keroro is an adorable member of a militant race of Space Frogs (a sergeant in fact) who arrived to earth as part of an early attack squadron intending to conquer the planet. Once the invaders discover that humans aren’t quite the pushovers they initially perceived, the mission is aborted and the few frog troopers in the first wave of attack are abandoned.

Of course that first wave includes the title character, Sgt. Keroro and we follow along on the adventures of he and his adoptive earth family which includes a 9-year-old boy nerd, a 13-year old tom boy girl, and their mother- a crotch-rocket riding comic book artist. Best of all they give our hero a room that was a former-bomb shelter beneath the stairway of their house that just so happens to be haunted by the ghost of a tortured young girl.

Keroro isn’t quite ready to abandon all hopes of planetary conquest despite the fact that he discovers that he is actually growing quite fond of the human race and worse still, has developed an addiction to anime (Robotech), toys (Gundam models) and of all things, karaoke.

As the show progresses, he discovers that some of his fellow frog troops are actually right in his own neighborhood and have been adopted by human families as well. Their collective mission remains in the hopes that their entire army will one day return to fulfill the goal of conquering earth but in the mean time there is plenty of adventure to be had on the “blue planet”.

If this sounds a little goofy to you so far, don’t worry it is. Although the overall theme harkens back to the type of animorphic-action that was big here in the U.S. in the late 1980s (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, anyone), the truth is this show works on an entirely different plane. Namely it’s funny. No not just witty banter between its lead characters but pop-culture funny with references that come fast and constant. Little things like “Boy this is just like the beginning and ending scenes in all of the Jurassic Parks” or “You’re more picky than (David) Fincher!” or perhaps even “This will allow me to become invisible like the conceal option on Facebook” should provide an indication of the tone here. While some may argue the original Japanese dialog is funny enough to stand on its own merit, I must counter that Funimation went the extra mile in the English dub to keep the humor on point!

It’s common knowledge that Funimation spent a lot of time screening early versions of the dub to North American test audiences (including making clips available for review on Youtube) before being satisfied with the dub. The good news is that the attention to detail pays dividends. The bright over-the-top cutes-ness of the visuals will keep the younger set interested while the dialog (sociological references especially) will ensure that the adults will be snickering.

This is one of very few times I will go as far as to say that the English dub is superior to the original Japanese dialog track. Yes, it really works that well.

In all I would be exaggerating if I were to say that this is an animated show for everyone but it will certainly appeal to a wide audience thanks to a near-endless succession of little gags and bits that work on many levels. The grand story arc, while in no danger for being mistaken for a modern day masterpiece, is just quaint enough to keep the situations advancing from episode to episode. It’s the humor and zing of the characters within (and that includes the narrator and subtitles) that steal the show. Kudos to Funimation for recognizing the potential of the source material and for custom-tailoring it to appeal to its target audience.

This is one of my favorite productions to brandish the HISTORY CHANNEL logo. I watched the first two episodes on television during the first “7 Deadly Sins” marathon when it first aired and was absolutely glued to the TV. I never got to see more than the first two and had to wait for the DVD pre-order to arrive to finish the adventure.

The two discs run a total of five and a half hours. That’s a lot of DVD for under $20. (as of now). The first disc has four sins and the second has what most believe to be the Three Capital Sins. The chapters for each episode are surprisingly well broken up considering this is a ‘lower profile’ HISTORY CHANNEL production.

The noir presentation and production suits the material perfectly. Instead of the typical documentary style that can hamper a message it is trying to convey, this goes all out. I see lot of documentaries that do little to enhance the narrative and it’s not the case here. Ingenious is the use of ‘digital paper cut-out’ transition scenes and digitized dramatization scenes. True, some of the scenes are badly acted, but it adds to lighten the atmosphere of the content.

And being a huge fan of Dante’s literary masterpiece DIVINA COMMEDIA, using Dante’s work to illustrate the penalties of sin is an obvious signature for each episode. Now I kind of wish Flight 33 Productions would interpret the Divine Comedy on film. Not just Hell, but Purgatory and Heaven as well.

Though being a “Christian focus”, the DVD does well to consider the views of Judaism, Islam and the scientific and/or secular communities to further validate the concern of each sin.

Even if you are theologically well-versed and studied, this is still a nice resource to have and is entertaining to boot.

I’m a bit of a historian myself, however, in the East Asian Civilizations but I have always been fascinated by the 7 Deadly Sins where they come from and where they take us. However, this format of history telling is a bit too accessible for me. It seems like they feel their audience is bunch of ADD teenagers that’ll switch the channel unless they are shocked with another FUN FACT of history. I personally would have preferred it straight up without all the bells and whistles. I liked all the interviews from everyone from Jewish Temples to Mosques and Churches. From Catholic Priests to Faith-Healers and Imams. However, in the end, the focus of the program seems to be more what people thing of the sins now than where they came from. The narrator sounds like that guy Don Fontaine who used to do all those Action movie Trailers making the whole production feel rushed trying (as mentioned above) trying to keep the attention of a very ADD audience.

However, as another reviewer mentioned, [...] for nearly 7 TV hours of history is a bit of a bargain so 3 stars from me.

Based on the very popular and successful TV series, “Cowboy Bebop: The Movie” is one entertaining thrill ride that really shows how effective anime can really be when it is done correctly. It’s hard to think of a cartoon being so action-packed and involving, but this movie does a splendid job of doing just that. You’re plunged right into the nail-biting action that will have you glued to your seat until it is well over.

The movie revolves around a bunch of outlaw bounty hunters. In Mars, there’s a suspected terrorist running around with a virus that could very well wipe out the existence of human beings. Spike and company decide to take the case, as there is a large reward that will be given to the person or persons who catches the madman. The only trouble is that Spike and the gang have stumbled onto something that is much more than a simple bounty and end up discovering a big conspiracy that will throw their lives into ultimate danger. The action and excitement never ends until the shocking finale.

I watched the movie TWICE in one day. Right after I had seen it for the first time, I had to immediately watch it again. You know a movie is powerful when it has that kind of effect on you. Very rarely do I run into movies that make me want to watch it again right then and there. When you’re watching “Cowboy Bebop,” you really don’t view it as an animated feature, but as a real living and breathing film. It is done that well. And, the great thing about this movie is that you do not have to have seen the show before. I watched this without seeing any of the shows and was able to follow it without any problems. Of course, chances are that you will want to watch the series after viewing the movie. The story is well thought out and appropriately structured. There isn’t a single dull moment in the entire movie.

A little warning; although this is an animated feature, the movie is rated R. While it is certainly more mild than most anime, the movie does contain violence and language. I don’t think this is anything for very young children, but I don’t see a reason why older teens shouldn’t be able to enjoy it.

The DVD has some nifty features to offer. First off, the picture quality is GORGEOUS. Even though it is an animated movie, the picture quality is fantastic and it really shows if you have great home theater system. The sound is also very good. Extras included are featurettes, music videos, storyboard comparisons, trailers and more. You can also watch it in the original Japanese audio track or the dubbed English one. I have to say, they do a great job of dubbing it in English. If you’re not a fan of subtitles, then check it out in English. Overall, a very cool DVD package.

If you’re looking for a wild and exciting trip filled with humor and thrills, “Cowboy Bebop: The Movie” is just for you. Again, you do not have to have seen the actual TV series to understand the characters or the story. The movie does a fine job of standing on its own. This is truly a great movie that shows you just how exciting anime can be. Definitely a favorite. -Michael Crane

Spike, Jet, Faye and Ed go after a Bio-terrorist worth a LOT of money. Good music from start to end (stay for the credits), with lots of humor and the characters are the same ones we love from the series, no changes like they do with other anime characters when they put them onto the big screen. Lovely camera shots, good quality work and you can tell they spent a lot of time working on the details. When the DVD comes out with lots of extras and both subtitles and dubbing in the English, you can BET your life I’m going to buy it. If you can’t wait the DVD is already out from Japan (English subtitles only).
Try to see it on the big screen first. Not only does it seem to live, to reach out and touch you, but you’re with other fans of Cowboy Bebop. How can you lose?
Even Ein has a few good scenes!!!
Go see it!

For fans of Harold & Kumar, Half-Baked, Cheech and Chong, etc. this film may hold limited appeal. It doesn’t star buddy-buddy man-boys, it isn’t very sexist or homophobic, and it has humor, references and film technique that occasionally rise above the level of a sit-com. What it also has is an absolutely brilliant central performance by the eternally-underrated Anna Faris, who would be this generation’s Diane Keaton if anyone in Hollywood understood what to do with her.

Gregg Araki revisits many of the themes of his career from a totally fresh and unexpected perspective. It’s not realistic or terribly meaningful and it isn’t supposed to be. It’s just pure, delicious fun.

I’ve read some comments elsewhere that claim this film is anti-drug: ridiculous. Jane’s actions have consequences but she doesn’t seem particularly upset by it in the end. Every weed-movie of recent years including all those I mentioned above have featured people getting busted, cops, moralism, paranoia, and unrealistic hallucinations/behaviors to some degree. The only difference here in terms of content is that it stars a woman and is entirely about her experience. If you find that bothersome it might be worth asking yourself why.

Smiley Face is a great, funny, and stimulating change of pace from the normal stoner comedies. Yeah, sure it’s exaggerated, but the best ones ARE! ^_^ Wonderful, funny movie. Jane Lynch rocks it! Anna Faris is the new face of Comedy.

The premise as most know a girl Suzy Banyon, an American ballet dancer arrives at a well known European dance academy run by mysterious teachers where nothing is as it seems. As Suzy arrives at night in a horrible thunder and lightening storm a girl is leaving in a frenzy yelling a secret into the night, what follows is as Entertainment Weekly calls “the most vicious murder scene ever filmed”.

Director Dario Argento “paints” an effective horror story, he puts relatable people in relatable situations so we can buy into his film. Then very cleverly has dreamlike sets bursting with colors, we as viewers subconsciously know something isn’t right and I believe this use of color subtly keeps us on edge. Even the title of the film, What is Suspiria? I googled it to find it is a film by Dario Argento, so even the title has us subconsciously unsure going in. Although I could be wrong on that. Then add an unrelenting, nerve wracking, and haunting score by Goblin (one of the most effective I’ve experienced). We enter with Suzy into this academy and we know something isn’t right, we are experiencing what she is, it is like a dream and maybe nothing is wrong, and with the blink of an eye this dream becomes a nightmare, we can stop the dvd but what is Suzy going to do?

The transfer and the sound are going to be the same, if you didn’t own any copy i would say this 2 disc version for 5$ more is the way to go, also if your an Argento fan or fan of the film, disc 2′s features most likely will be worth it to you.

Hope this helps..

For those of us who think that Wes Craven is the master of the horror genre, we can think again. I’m speaking these words after watching “Suspiria,” one of the most frightening and terrifying horror movies ever made. Created by Italian director Dario Argento, the movie manages to be menacing and gory at the same time, and Argento fills his canvas with a vast array of vivid yet bizarre colors, eerie lighting and camera techniques, and a soundtrack to top all horror soundtracks. In short, this is one hell of a scary movie!

The plot is a basic one, more of a vehicle for Argento’s explorative imagination. It begins with a storm, as young Susy Banyon (Jessica Harper) arrives in Germany to attend ballet school. Argento wastes no time in creating a sense of unease, from her cab ride to the school, as she watches the colors of street lights in the pouring rain, to the gruesome and outright malicious murder of a runaway student. All of this happens within the first ten minutes, which should be a message of what lies ahead (in other words, be prepared).

The movie then takes us to the school itself, a dazzling array of vivid colors and elaborate set pieces that put the house in Robert Wise’s “The Haunting” to shame. Susy is shown the many rooms and introduced to the staff and students, though discovers that she will be rooming off campus. That is, until she begins to get suspicious about strange occurrences, and the staff relocates her to the premises. Her suspicions mount higher, and she begins to wonder if there isn’t more to the ladies that run the academy.

You may find yourself forgetting the plot behind all of this mayhem, but that’s perfectly reasonable, given the fact that Argento seems to be more interested in attacking our minds than provoking them. And he succeeds in doing just that, taking us into the darkest depths of horror with his adept use of gore, bursting colors, camera movements and creepy sounds from all around.

This is extremely unsettling stuff here, some of the most elaborate yet unbearable set pieces ever constructed for a film. The beginning murder sequence is a true shocker, one that we see coming, but never in such a gruesome manner. Other sequences involve a blind man being attacked by his own seeing-eye dog, multiple stabbings, a girl’s corpse coming back to life… it never stops.

But it all works due to Argento’s ability to get under our skin before shocking us out of it. Before each scene of brutality, there is a wonderful buildup of suspense and terror, because even though we know what’s going to happen, we’re totally in the dark as to how it will occur. He keeps us waiting impatiently by employing a slowly building soundtrack, heightened by slow camera movements that center on the faces of the person involved.

“Suspiria” will remain in the memory long after its first viewing; in fact, you may never forget it. It stands out as a visionary masterpiece, one for the senses and the mind, a horror film that transcends the boundaries of the genre. I was intrigued by every minute of this film, which keeps you in the moment long after it’s already passed.
